How to Grow Your Business with Video

Video has become an important tool to use to grow your business.  In the online world, video can attract the kind of attention that static images, text, or even flashy web pages cannot. One important decision is whether to do-it-yourself or to have a professional video production company handle the product for you.  This decision is often a difficult one for small business owners due to capital constraints.

If your product or service demands it and you have the budget to pay for a professional video production, then by all means, go for it!  A professional video company offers a compelling value proposition because they handle the technical stuff (lighting, sound, and editing) and they use their experience to “tell” your story.

For some audiences, you talking to a smart phone cam is enough to get your message across and it is cost-effective.  Just keep in mind that you talking to a smart phone cam might not portray your message in the most favorable light.  It all depends on you, your product or service, and your intended audience.  If you decide to take the do-it-yourself approach, use the following tips to ensure that your video is effective at marketing your message.

Consider the audience

Your target audience is the primary consideration for your video. What are they going to get out of watching your video? Define them as precisely as you can: gender, age, profession, educational background, and income. Then, try and figure out what problems they have and how your video can solve them.

Know what you’re going to say

While you don’t necessarily need to have a script, you should at least outline the major points you want to cover in your video. Make sure that it’s short, no more than one or two minutes, or you risk losing the interest of your audience. Rehearse what you’re going to say to get the timing down before turning on the camera.

Use a good mic

Your words must be clear and easy to hear. Smart phone mics do not provide the best quality sound. Visit a audio store and tell the sales clerk what you’re planning. They can then recommend a mic that plugs into your camera, but records your voice with much better quality.

A good video can bring new customers to your business, so don’t forget to end your effort with contact information or a link to your website.

Remember, running a business successfully does not need to be complicated.  Keep it simple!
