How to Grow Your Business by Laughing

Whether your business grows in the world of grey suits and firm handshakes, button-ups and casual conversations, or online profiles, the common threads are probably the same. After all, no business owner can avoid the inevitable hardships that come with massive responsibility and tough decisions. As a business leader, it is sometimes important to be serious. But if you know how to grow your business successfully, you are also aware that it is just as important to sometimes not be serious at all.

Laughter is fun, however fun is just the beginning. Humor and laughter have been shown to have a myriad of benefits. Here are a few.

  • Laughter relieves stress and increases resilience; thus creating a lighter, friendlier, and far more productive day, and spreading the same to whatever employees you may have.
  • It creates bonding between individuals; leading to more cohesive teams, better cooperation, and fantastic results when collaborating with others.
  • It improves health. Laughter has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease, increase immunity, reduce pain, and increase relaxation while lowering levels of stress hormones.
  • Laughter and humor–and the attitudes they produce–are attractive qualities. People want to be around those who are lighthearted and funny, and such an attitude inspires trust and confidence in potential clients.
  • It increases learning. Humor opens your mind to new ideas and possibilities and also causes a shift in the brain that heightens its awareness and potential to remember long term.
  • It makes employees more likely to share ideas and innovate. A relaxed and joyful environment fosters the sharing of ideas much more than a stressful or critical one.
  • It increases creative output. Laughter opens the mind and allows you to think outside your ordinary patterns. It also shifts your thinking from being predominantly left-brain to more right-brain, where creativity flourishes.

And if that’s not enough reason to laugh a little during the workday and to encourage others to do the same, remember that ultimately, the purpose of starting a business is to create happiness:  for yourself, for your employees, for your clients and customers. With laughter, you’re already on your way towards your goal for free!

Remember, running a business successfully does not need to be complicated.  Keep it simple!
